PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for coenzyme Q easily in high yield in an easy apparatus, by oxidizing a 2-methyl- 4,5,6-trialkoxyphenol as a raw material with nitric acid.
CONSTITUTION: A 2-methyl-4,5,6-benzaldehyde of formula III (R is lower alkyl, e.g. CH3, C2H5 or C3H7, etc.) is oxidized with H2O2 to give a 2-methyl-4,5,6- trialkoxyphenol of formula IV, which is without isolation oxidized with nitric acid in 40W100% concentration at room temperature to afford the aimed compound of formula I in a yield as high as ≥90%. The nitric acid concentration is preferably high, but nitric acid in ≤40% concentration may be used by heating.
EFFECT: The influence on not only the cost but also the waste water treatment is desirable.
