PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing coenzyme Q easily in high yield, by reacting a 2-methyl-4,5,6-trialkoxybenzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acidic catalyst, and oxidizing the resultant reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: A 2-methyl-4,5,6-trialkoxybenzaldehyde of formula III (R is lower alkyl) is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acidic catalyst, e.g. sulfuric acid, to produce a 2-methyl-4,5,6-trialkoxyphenol of formula IV, which is then oxidized with nitric acid to afford the aimed compound of formula I .
EFFECT: The aimed compound can be obtained in ≥90% yield, and the method has good influence not only on the industrial cost but also on waste water treatment. Since the reaction is relatively easily carried out, a simple apparatus is sufficient.
