Abstract:
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as an intermediate of coenzyme Q, economically, in high yield, in a short and simple procedure, by oxidizing 2-methyl- 4, 5, 6-trimethoxybenzaldehyde with a peroxide.
CONSTITUTION: 2, 3-Dimethoxy-5-methyl-1, 4-benzoquinone of formula II is prepared by oxidizing 2-methyl-4, 5, 6-trimethoxybenzaldehyde of formula I with a peroxide (e.g. inorganic peroxide such as hydrogen peroxide and persulfuric acid, organic peroxide such as peracetic acid, performic acid, and perbenzoic acid), under mild conditions (0W50°C). The compound I can be prepared easily and economically, by the Gattermann aldehyde synthesis of a 3, 4, 5-tri-methoxytoluene which is available at low cost.
