PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance in high yield, by reacting p-isopropenylphenol of a specific concentration with an alkali metallic hydroxide in DMSO solvent, removing the formed water, and then reacting the resultant product with p- trifluoromethylchlorobenzene.
CONSTITUTION: p-Isopropenylphenol (A) is reacted with an alkali metallic hydroxide or its mixture with its carbonate as an alkaline agent in DMSO solvent to remove the formed water, and then p-trifluoromethylchlorobenzene (B) is added and reacted at 140W170°C to give a compound of the formula. The concentration of the compound (A) in the DMSO has a great influence on the reaction efficiency, and the preferable concentration is 5W30wt%. When the hydroxide and carbonate are used together as the alkaline agent, the molar ratio of hydroxide:carbonate is 1:0.1W0.2. The molar ratio of the compound (A): the alkaline agent is 1:1.0W1.2, and that of the compound (A): the compound (B) is 1:1.5W3.0.
USE: An intermediate for agricultural chemicals and medicines.
