Title:
PREPARATION OF 4,4'-DIHYDROXYBIPHENYL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH03215444
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prepare the objective compound in a high yield by adding ammonia or an ammonium salt to an oxidation reaction when 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenyl with molecular oxygen and the product is decomposed with an acid to prepare the subject compound.

CONSTITUTION: When 4,4'-diisopropylbiphenyl(DIPBP) is oxidized with molecular oxygen and the product is decomposed with an acid to 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl useful as a raw material for crystalline polymers, heat-resistant resins, etc., the oxidation reaction is performed in the presence of ammonia or an ammonium salt in an amount of 0.01-300mol%, preferably 0.1-150mol%, essentially 50mol%, based on the DIPBP to profitably prepare the objective compound in a high yield and in a high selectivity of DHP in the oxidation products in the table in a small amount of hydroperoxide without requiring any radical initiator.
