Abstract:
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high yield, without side reactions, reducing the consumption of caustic potash, by the alkali fusion of 4,4'-diphenyldisulfonic acid or its potassium salt using caustic potash in combination with potassium sulfate.
CONSTITUTION: 4,4'-Dihydroxydiphenyl is prepared by the alkali fusion of 4,4'- diphenyldisulfonic acid or its salt. The alkali fusion is carried out by using 4W 10mol of causitc potash in combination with 0.1W1mol of potassium sulfate per 1mol of the 4,4'-diphenyldisulfonic acid or its potassium salt. Since the consumption of the caustic alkali can be reduced remarkably, it is not necessary to recover or concentrate the alkali after the reaction.
