PURPOSE: To obtain economically the titled compound useful as an intermediate for various industrial chemicals such as agricultural chemical, dye, etc. in high yield, by reacting 9,10-phenanthrene-oxide with the most inexpensive nitric acid as a reagent oxidizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: 9,10-Phenanthrene-oxide, preferably its solution in a solvent such as methylene dichloride, is reacted with nitric acid in an aqueous medium within 0W200°C, preferably 10W100°C temperature range to obtain the titled compound. The amount of the nitric acid to be used is 0.1W10mol, preferably 0.5W5mol based on 1mol 9,10-phenanthrene-oxide. The concentration of the nitric acid in the reaction system is 1W70wt%, preferably 3W30wt% when calculated as an aqueous solution. The reaction time is 10secW10hr, preferably 1minW1hr.
