Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a method for preparing an acetal and a hemiacetal ester from sec. and tert. alcohols in high selectivity and with high conversion rate, in the absence of a mercury catalyst and of an active support.
CONSTITUTION: The acetal and hemiacetal are prepared by reacting a vinyl ester with an alcohol in a solvent having a dielectric constant of about 15-50 in the presence of an effective amount of palladium- or platinum-containing catalyst, in the absence of an active support, under reaction conditions sufficient to form the acetal and hemiacetal ester, and recovering the obtained acetal or hemiacetal ester.
