PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines, etc. easily and efficiently in high yield, by oxidizing a hydroquinone monoalkyl ether in a substance supplying oxygen in the presence of a copper (II) salt.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroquinone monoalkyl ethr of formula I (R is lower alkyl; R1WR4 are H, lower alkyloxy or lower alkyl, provided that at least one of R1WR4 is lower alkyloxy) easily obtained by oxidizing an easily available polyalkoxybenzaldehyde is oxidized in a solvent in the presence of a substance supplying oxygen and a copper (II) salt at 0W100°C, preferably 20W80°C to give the aimed compound of formula II. O2, air and a mixture of O2 with an inert gas may be cited as the substance supplying oxygen, and copper (II) chloride, copper (II) bromide, copper (II) acetate, etc. may be cited as the copper (II) salt.
USE: A synthetic intermediate for p-benzoquinone analogs which are coenzyme Q10 having anticancer action.
