Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a method to prepare an alkyl-(3-chlorophenyl)sulfone which is important as an intermediate in the preparation of crop protecting agents.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylphenyl sulfone is chlorinated in molten form with elemental chlorine in the presence of iron (III) chloride or iron (III) chloride + iodine and/or sulfur. As a results, obtained at a high conversion rate is an alkyl-(3-chlorophenyl)-sulfone of high purity with a reduced amount of by- products such as highly chlorinated substances or water soluble substances.
