PURPOSE: To obtain alkylhalosilanes by the direct method in high yield by contacting an alkyl halide with a fluidized bed of particulate silicon having a specified article size in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst system.
CONSTITUTION: An alkyl halide(suitably methyl chloride) of the formula: RX (wherein R is 1-4C alkyl; and X is a halogen) is contacted with a fluidized bed of particulate silicon having a particle size of 2-85 μm in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst composition (suitably containing 0.1-10 wt.% copper, 550-10,000 ppm zinc, 5-200 ppm tin and 25-2,500 ppm phosphorus based on the Si present in the process) at 250-350°C to obtain the objective product of the formula (wherein (a) is 1-3; (b) is 0-2; and a+b is 1-3). Further, as the compound of the formula is preferred dimethyldichlorosilane. Also, it is preferred that the silicon has a particle mass distribution of a 10th percentile of 2.5-4.5 μm, a 50th percentile of 12-25 μm and a 90th percentile of 35-45 μm.
