PURPOSE: To obtain allyl alcohol in a high yield in one step, by ring opening and isomerization of an epoxy-terminated compound in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An epoxy compound of formula I: (R is hydroxyl group which may be protected, arylthio, lower anylsulfonyl group, etc.; Y is H, anylthio, or arylsulfonyl group; n is an integer 0W10) is subjected to ring opening and isomerization in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid or a lower alkoxide of aluminum to give an allyl alcohol of formula II. Preferably, camphorsulfonic, p-tert-butyl benzene-sulfonic acids may be used as the organic sulfonic acid, and the amount is about 1/10W1/50 mole per mole of the epoxy compound. Methylene chloride is preferably used as a solvent when the organic sulfonic acid is used.
