Abstract:

A process for preparation of alpha-disubstituted monocarboxylic acids and esters thereof comprises carboxylation of a tertiary ether of formula wherein R1 to R3 each represent a C1-C12 aliphatic or cyclic hydrocarbon, optionally unsaturated and/or substituted and R5 is C1 to C3 saturated monovalent hydrocarbon by formic acid or an alkyl formate in the presence of a concentrated protonic acid. Tertiary ethers such as methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and methyl tert-amyl ether (TAME) produce particularly useful acids and ethers. The acids and esters produced by the process are particularly useful in the fields of pharmacy, cosmetics, agriculture and as additives for lubricants.
