PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as a dye, etc. in high yield, by reacting a m-substituted aminothiophenol compound with phthalic acid anhydride (or its nucleus-substituted derivative).
CONSTITUTION: The objective aminothiofluoran compound of formula III [R is lower alkyl; Y is H or a functional group (e.g. halogen, nitro, etc.)], is prepared by reacting a m-substituted aminothiophenol of formula I with a phthalic acid anhydride (or its nucleus-substituted derivative), optionally in the presence of a Friedel- Crafts catalyst, at 140W150°C (molten state) for 1W2hr. The reaction may be carried out under reflux using a solvent. The molar ratio of the compound I to the compound II is e.g. 2:1.
USE: Raw material of aminothiofluoran-γ-lactam compound, etc.
