Abstract:
PURPOSE: To stably obtain an aq. emulsion free from discoloration through heating on a practical and industrial scale by using an initiator capable of forming free radicals through a redox reaction with SH groups in a PVA polymer used as a dispersant.
CONSTITUTION: In emulsion polymn. of a monomer selected from among ethylenically unsatd. monomers and diene monomers in the presence of an SH group-contg. PVA polymer as a dispersant, an aq. emulsion is prepd. by forming free radicals through a redox reaction of SH groups of the PVA polymer with a hydroperoxide of the formula: ROOH (therein R is a hydrocarbon group). In the foregoing method, since the SH group-contg. PVA polymer very active in a free radical reaction is used as the dispersant together with the initiator capable of forming free radicals through a redox reaction with SH groups of the PVA polymer to allow smooth polymn. to proceed up to a high conversion, the aq. emulsion is obtd. practically, industrially and effectively.
