PURPOSE: To prepare the subject substance in good productivity, good catalyst separability and excellent safety by hydrogenating an aromatic nitro compound in the presence of a platinum group metal catalyst in a water-soluble solvent and subsequently filtering the reaction product to remove the catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (e.g. D-threo-1-p-nitrophenyl-2- aminopropane-1,3-diol) is hydrogenated in the presence of a platinum group metal catalyst in only water solvent at 0-150°C under 0.1-100 atmospheric pressure and the catalyst is filtered off from the reaction products to provide a compound of formula II. A metal such as Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir or Ru singly or a combination thereof optionally carried on carbon, alumina, etc., can be employed as the catalyst. Since treated in water, the catalyst has no anxiety of ignition. The product is highly stable and does not cause the coloring or purity lowering of the product.
