PURPOSE: To obtain the subject polymer containing aromatic rings in the main chain with less halogen impurities content by treating a polymer containing disubstituted cyclohexenylene rings in the main chain with an (alkali) metal salt or with heat.
CONSTITUTION: The polymer, containing 1,2-disubstituted cyclohexenylene rings in the main chain, of the formula (wherein, X is absent or a residue of a copolymerizable monomer; n and m are each an integer and n:m is 1:0 to 1:100; and R1 is an acyl or hydrocarbylketo) is treated with a reagent comprising an (alkali) metal salt (e.g. potassium bromide, etc.), or with heat thereby eliminating the 1,2-substituents from all of the cyclohexenylene rings to obtained the desired polymer. Polymers of the formula, for example, cis-1,2-dihydroxy- cyclohexa-3,5-dienes, are produced by a mutant strain of Pseudomonas putida.
