PURPOSE: To prepare an asymmetric ketazine which is a synthetic intermediate of an asymmetric azo compound useful as an extremely excellent polymerization initiator, by reacting a mixture of two kinds of ketones with hydrazine.
CONSTITUTION: An asymmetric ketazine of formula (R1WR4 are alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, etc.; excluding the symmetric compound wherein the group composed of R1 and R2 is equal to the group of R3 and R4) is obtained by reacting a mixture of two kinds of ketones with hydrazine. The ketones are e.g. acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, acetophenone, etc. The optimum ratio of the two kinds of ketones is selected according to the reactivity of each ketone. Since the azo-type polymerization initiator derived from the asymmetric ketazine has various rate of decomposition, it gives the flexibility in the selection of the polymerization temperature for monomers, and enables the preparation of a polymer having unique properties which cannot be attained by conventional initiator.
