PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for dyes, etc. industrially and advantageously with suppressed side reactions, by diazotizing aniline with a gas containing a nitrogen oxide of specific atomic ratio between nitrogen and oxygen and a specific nitrogen oxide concentration in the presence of an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid in a specific relation of amount.
CONSTITUTION: Aniline is diazotized with a gas containing a nitrogen oxide in the presence of an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid. In the process, the diazotizing reaction is carried out with the gas containing the nitrogen oxide gas in a concetration of 8vol% or more at an atomic ratio between the nitrogen atoms and the oxygen atoms of 0.6W0.75, a molar ratio between the sulfuric acid and the aniline of 0.5W1.5 and a molar ratio between the water and the sulfuric acid of 16W110 at a temperature in the range of -10 to +10°C, preferably - 5 to +3°C, to give the aimed compound.
