PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for a polyester resin or a smoothing agent in a short time, by reacting bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone with an alkylene carbonate without a solvent at a temperature of the melting point or below under ordinary pressure.

CONSTITUTION: Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone of formula I is reacted with an alkylene carbonate of formula II [R is 2W4C alkylene; a and m are numbers ≥0; however, (n+m)≥1], e.g. ethylene carbonate, in the presence of an alkali catalyst, e.g. Li or Na, to give a bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone derivative of formula III. The reaction is carried out at 185W250°C under ordinary pressure in an atmosphere of an inert gas, e.g. N2.
