PURPOSE: To prepare simply an org. titanium compd. useful as a catalyst for esterification or polymn., a cross-linking agent, or an intermediate for titanium oxide films, in a stable form easily dissolvable into water and easy to store and transport.
CONSTITUTION: A solid or liq carboxylic acid, preferably oxalic, citric or lactic acid, is mixed with an inert fluid diluent, preferably hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon such as chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, benzene, etc., to react the carboxylic acid in the mixture with a titanium alkoxide, preferably one derived from alcohol with up to C8, especially titanium tetraethoxide, titanium tetraisopropoxide, etc., to ppt. a carboxylic acid titanium deriv. to obtain the compd. Either of anhydride and hydrate of the carboxylic acid can be used, although in the case of hydrate it is pref. to pre-remove water through codistillation with the idiluent. As the diluent a fluid, in which the carboxylic acid and the product of interest are substaintially insoluble, is used.
