To easily manufacture a catalyst by a method wherein the catalyst is prepared by containing group VIII metals and an additional element M such as germanium, tin, lead, rhenium or the like in a support, and as the additional element M that in a shape of an organic metal compound containing carbon-the element M bond is introduced into an aqueous solvent of a specific pH.
When a catalyst is manufactured, at least one support is provided. As the support to be used, at least one flame-retardant oxide selected from metal oxides of magnesium, aluminum, silicon, titanium or the like, and active carbon are mentioned. Then a required catalyst is prepared by containing at least one group VIII metal selected from iridium, nickel, palladium, platinum, rhodium and ruthenium, and additional element M such as germanium, tin, lead, rhenium, niobium, gallium, indium, thallium, gold, silver or the like in such a support.
