PURPOSE: To improve initial characteristics as a catalyst for an electrode and to reduce cost by adding noble metal ions and carbon powder to an aq. soln. of alcohol as a reducing agent without using protective colloid to support noble metal particles on the carbon powder.
CONSTITUTION: When a catalyst for a carbon electrode mainly for a methanol fuel cell is prepd., ions of a noble metal such as Pt and carbon powder such as carbon black are added to an aq. soln. of alcohol such as methanol as a reducing agent. The particle size of deposited noble metal particles becomes smaller than that of protective colloid and the particles are uniformly dispersed and supported on the carbon carrier. The initial characteristics of the resulting catalyst as a catalyst for a carbon electrode can be improved and the cost of production of the electrode is reduced.
