PURPOSE: To safely obtain a compound for synthesis of dyes without need for high pressure containers by chlorination or oxidative chlorination of a quinone, etc., without a chlorination catalyst in a particular solvent under atmospheric pressure.

CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is obtained by chlorination or oxidative chlorination of a quinone, hydroquinone or their chlorination derivatives under atmospheric pressure. An adequate solvent for use is an acetic acid or an ethanol with a ratio ≥0.5 particularly ≥1 to hydrochloric acid solution on a volume basis. An oxidative chlorinating agent for use is selected from a chlorine and a mixture of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen. A quinone, etc., are introduced into a chlorohydric acid or water and/or a reaction medium of a solvent in the concentration not higher than 130 to 140 g/l preferably about 110 g/l.
