Title:
PREPARATION OF CITRACONIC ANHYDRIDE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH07247277
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain citraconic anhydride in a single step without a problem of adjusting temperature in good yield and without causing polymerization by heating itaconic acid in the presence of a specific catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: For example, in a reaction solvent such as (pseudo)cumene, (A) itaconic acid is added with 0.1-30 (wt.)% (preferably 1-4%), based on component (A), catalyst of an at least partially organic acid/base type having a pKa of 4-10 (preferably 5-9) and a melting point of lower than 200°C (preferably not higher than 180°C) (suitable examples being pyridium p-toluenesulfonate, pyridium itaconate or the like) and heated to 130-180°C (preferably 150-170°C), and the water formed is removed by azeotropic distillation during the reaction to obtain citraconic anhydride.
