PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound at low cost, high yield and purity, in a simple process, without causing pollution, by reacting cyclohexanone or cyclohexanol with H2S in the gaseous phase in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Cyclohexanone of formula I is reacted with H2S in the gaseous phase in the presence of H2 and a catalyst, e.g. a metal oxide or sulfide, or Ni, containing at least one type of metal of Group VIB or VIII in the periodic table at 100W300°C to give cyclohexylmercaptan of formula III. Alternatively, cyclohexanol of formula II is reacted with H2S in the absence of H2. The by-product cyclohexene is also reacted with H2S under the similar reaction conditions to give the compound of formula III.
USE: Polymerization modifiers and raw materials for rubber chemicals.
