To readily prepare a high-purity dialkyl succinylsuccinate useful for producing quinacridone in high yield by reacting a metallic alcoholate with a dialkyl succinate under anhydrous conditions, then separating the resultant salt of the dialkyl succinylsuccinate in an anhydrous state and neutralizing the separated salt of the dialkyl succinylsuccinate.
A mixture comprising (A) an alkali metallic alcoholate, (B) an aliphatic alcohol and (C) an excessive amount of a liquid dialkyl succinate is reacted at a high temperature in an anhydrous state and the component (B) is then removed from the resultant reactional mixture. A solid di(alkali metallic) salt of the dialkyl succinylsuccinate is separated from the anhydrous supernatant and then neutralized to prepare the dialkyl succinylsuccinate. For example, sodium methylate, methanol and dimethyl succinate are respectively used as the components (A), (B) and (C).
