PURPOSE: To provide an improved process for preparing diglycerol and/or polyglycerol, in which process the cyclic ingredient content in the product composition is suppressed, diglycerol is obtained as the chief product, and the formation of chloride-containing hydrolysis-resistant organic compounds is sufficiently avoided.
CONSTITUTION: Isopropylideneglycerol and α-monochlorohydrin are allowed to be converted into monoisopropylideneglycerol, in the presence of at least one alkaline compound at 10 to 110°C and from this reaction mixture the major portion of the formed salt and/or water is removed, the excess amount of isopropylideneglycerol is removed by distillation, and subsequently monoisopropylideneglycerol is converted into diglycerol and/or triglycerol and/or other polyglycerols and acetone in the presence of at least one acid catalyst and/or acidic ion exchanger and in the presence of water at 20 to 110°C.
