PURPOSE: In preparing ethanol by reacting methanol with carbon monoxide and hydrogen, to raise yield without causing by-products, by combining a cobalt or cobalt-halogen system catalyst with a tertiary amine and a different ligand of tertiary amine.
CONSTITUTION: In reacting methanol with carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) 1W300mg atom, preferably 5W100mg atom culculated as cobalt atom of a cobalt compound, (B) 2W600mg atom, preferably 10W200mg atom calculated as phosphorus atom of a tertiary phosphine, and (C) 1W300mg atom, preferably 5W100mg atom calculated as nitrogen atom of a tertiary amine and in an atom ratio of cobalt: phosphorus: nitrogen of 1:0.2W5:0.05W2, to give ethanol. The addition of a proper amount of a halogen (atom ratio to cobalt of 1:0.1W0.5) keeps selectivity of ethanol and provides high reaction rate.
