PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound at a low catalytic temperature in a short reaction time under mild conditions, by the reaction of acetic anhydride with H2 in the presence of a novel catalyst system consisting of a metal selected from group VIII or its compound and a halide.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic anhydride is reacted with H2 in the presence of a catalyst system of one or more of metals selected from group VIII, e.g. Pd or Ph, and/or its compound, e.g. palladium acetate, in an amount of 5×10-4W20wt% as metal based on the reaction solution, and a halide comprising an iodide, a chloride and/or a bromide, e.g. CH3I, CH3Cl or CH3Br, in an amount of 10-2W5moles/l as halogen atoms based on the volume of the whole reaction solution at 30W350°C and partial H2 pressure of 1W300atm. to give ethylidene diacetate and/or acetaldehyde.
