PURPOSE: To prepare a roughage suitable for ruminant, by cutting bark, etc., of Japanese cedar, charging the cut bark, etc., together with cereals into a treatment drum, crushing the mixture to extract the component of cedar and discharging the obtained mixture from the drum in the form of pellets.

CONSTITUTION: Trunk, branch, bark, etc., of Japanese cedar are finely cut, mixed with cereals such as rice bran, soybean cake, etc., charged into a treatment drum 1 and crushed with the drum 1 until the cells of cedar are disintegrated to extract the components of cedar (e.g. sap, minor elements such as vitamin, etc.). The obtained mixture is discharged from the treatment drum 1 in the form of paste or pellets. The extract is suitable as a roughage for ruminant. The use of the roughage as a substitute for rice straw enables the economic periodic thinning of cedar trees in mountain forest, strengthens the ground of the mountain in combination with the growth of the cedar trees and prevents the hazards of landslide, etc.
