PURPOSE: To prepare a highly concentrated coal/alcohol slurry with high fluidity and good stability, by putting coal having a specified particle size and reflectance in alcohol and performing agitation at a specified speed.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of an alcohol slurry of coal (pulverized coal) in a concentration of 65% or higher, coal containing particles of -200 mesh (72μm) in diameter in less than 75% and having a reflectance of 0.6 or higher, is fed into alcohol and agitation is performed at a speed controlled to below 5,000rpm. The maximum diameter has little influence when coal is dispersed in alcohol for preparation of a slurry, but when the content of particles with a size of less than -200 mesh exceeds 75%, the viscosity of the slurry increases rapidly and therefore the upper limit of the content is set at 75%. Furthermore, as high concentration of the slurry limits the types of coal to be used, the target concentration is set at 65% which affords a wider room for selection and coal may be selected from among those having a reflectance of 0.6 or higher.
