PURPOSE: To prepare a highly water absorptive cellulose material which has high water absorptive function for not only water but also an aqueous solution such as salts, urine, etc., containing ions.
CONSTITUTION: A crosslinked cellulose derivative is swelled in a mixed treatment solution consisting of water, an organic solvent compatible with water, and an ammonium salt or an alkali metal salt to give a gel having 3-50g/g swelling degree and the obtained gel is separated from the treatment solution by filtration, and then, after the gel is washed by an organic solvent compatible with water or immersed in the organic solvent to replace the water in the gel with the organic solvent, it is dried to give the objective highly water absorptive cellulose material.
