PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for perfumes, dyes, etc. in high yield, by reacting an N,N'-diarylformamidine with KOH and/ or NaOH in an inert solvent under heating while distilling away water formed as a by-product, and subjecting the resultant metallic salt to the ring closure under heating.
CONSTITUTION: An N,N'-diarylformamidine of formulaI(R is H or 1W3C alkyl; R1, R2 and R3 are H or 1W3C alkyl) obtained easily from an arylamine and formic acid at a low cost is heated with inexpensive and easily handleable potassium hydroxide and/or sodium hydroxide in an inert solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene or ethylbenzene, to form a potassium salt and/or sodium salt of the N,N'-diarylformamidine, which is then subjected to the ring closure under heating to afford the aimed indole of formula II.
USE: A raw material for alkaloids.
