PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for organic synthesis at low cost in high yield, by reacting a polyhydric alcohol or epoxide with a ketone in the presence of an acidic ion exchange resin and a lower monohydric alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: A polyhydric alconol (e.g., ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, etc.) or epoxide (e.g., ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, etc.) is reacted with a ketone (e.g., acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl-n-propyl ketone, etc.) to give a ketal. In the reaction, the reaction is carried out in the presence of an acidic ion exchange resin and a lower monohydric alcohol. The use of the lower monohydric alcohol can effectively reduce an amount of the ketone used. When the acidic ion exchange resin is used, it has the following merits, the separation of it after the reaction is easy, the continuous reaction is possible, and side reactions are small.
