Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a linear alpha-olefin having a high degree of linearity by oligomerizing ethylene in the presence of a homogeneous two-component catalyst consisting of the adduct of zirconium tetrahalide with an org. compd. as a first component and an alkyl metal as a second component.

CONSTITUTION: The ethylene is oligomerized in a soln. of an inert solvent under a pressure of 34 to 340 atg at 50 to 300°C in the presence of the homogeneous two-component catalyst of which the first component is the adduct of ZrClaBrb (a+b=4, (a), (b) are each 0 to 4) and the org. compd. up to 30C selected from esters, ketones, ethers amines, etc. and the second component is the alkyl metal catalyst selected from R2AIX, RAIX2, R3Al2X3, R3Al and R2n (R is 1 to 20C alkyl, X is Cl, Br), by which the linear alpha-olefin of Mn 70 to 700 is obtd. This compd. is useful as a raw materail for a specific surfactant.
