Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a hardener for epoxy compounds readily without causing environmental problems, by copolymerizing an isopropenylalkylbenzene with a maleic anhydride in the presence of a terra abla as a catalyst under specified temperature conditions.

CONSTITUTION: An isopropenylalkylbenzene of formula I (R is 1W4C alkyl group) is copolymerized with a maleic anhydride of formula II (X1 and X2 are H, halogen, aryl, alkyl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl groups) in a solvent, e.g. an aliphatic or aromatic sydrocarbon, in the presence of a terra abla as a catalyst at a temperature in the range of 80W200°C to give a low-molecular weight polyacid anhydride. Activated or acid clay which is in the form of (molded) powder, or lumps, may be used as the terra abla.
