PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, by the oxidation of isobutylene using a catalyst having excellent durability, and obtained by adding Cs, an element selected from V and Pd, and an element selected from Ti, Sn and Zr to a catalyst system of Mo-Bi-Fe-Co-O.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrolein is obtained by the catalytic reaction of isobutylene with O2 in the vapor-phase of high temperature in the presence of a catalyst having the composition of formula (X is V and/or Pd; Y is at least one element selected from a group of Ti, Sn and Zr; when a=12, b=2W12, c=0.5W7, d=0.1W5, e=0.0005W0.5, f=0.01W2, and g=0.1).
EFFECT: Both reactivity of isobutylene and selectivity of methacrolein are improved. The abrasion resistance, crushing strength, etc. of the catalyst are high. Operation can be continued safely over a long period.
