PURPOSE: To obtain efficiently medium distillates from a hydrocarbon feed by bringing a platinum catalyst supported on a carrier comprising amorphous silica-alumina starting material having a specified pore volume into contact with the hydrocarbon feed at a high temp. and a high pressure in the presence of hydrogen.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of medium distillates from a hydrocarbon feed which comprises fractions having higher boiling points than a boiling range of the medium distillate and which is obtained by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, an amorphous silica-alumina starting material having a pore volume of at least 1.0 ml/g, alumina, polyacrylamide and high molecular electrolyte are mixed and molded into particles, to make a carrier. The carrier is treated with an aq. soln. contg. hexachloroplatinic acid and nitric acid, to make a catalyst contg. platinum supported on the carrier. The catalyst is brought into contact with the hydrocarbon feed at 175-400°C and 10-250 bar in the presence of hydrogen, by which medium distillates are obtained efficiently from the hydrocarbon feed such as a product from Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.
