PURPOSE: To obtain a modified graphite fluoride having improved lubricity and cell characteristics, by irradiating water or an aqueous solution containing dispersed graphite fluoride, and decomposing partially the graphite fluoride.
CONSTITUTION: A graphite fluoride (GF), expressed by the formula (CF)n or/and (C2F)n, and having generally 0.01W100μ particle diameter is dispersed in water or an alkaline aqueous solution, e.g. NaOH. The concentration of the alkaline aqueous solution is generally 0.1W30wt%. The resultant solution is then irradiated with electromagnetic waves consisting of visible light, ultraviolet light and X-rays, etc. within 10-4W10-7cm wavelength range to decompose the GF in an amount within 0.01W50%, preferably 0.1W10%, decomposition ratio range. Thus, the aimed modified graphite fluoride (GF) is obtained. A cell having a positive pole consisting of the modified GF has a higher discharge potential, discharge capacity and utilization ratio of F in the GF than those in the case of unmodified GF, and the initial voltage drop in the discharge is improved.
