Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare the subject compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for radiation-curable coating compositions in high selectivity and in good space- time yield by reacting a diol with acetylene in the presence of a base.
SOLUTION: A diol represented by formula I (A stands for a chemical bond, a methylene or ethylene group; the radicals R1 and R2 stand for each H, an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or an aryl group or R1 and R2 together form a 3-5C alkylene bridging member) is reacted with acetylene in the presence of a base (e.g. KOH) at 150-250°C under an acetylene partial pressure of 5-25 bar until 40-80% of the diol has been converted to prepare a monovinyl ether represented by formula II. The acetylene is used in an amount of 0.4-5 mol based on 1 mol diol. A divinyl ether obtained as a by-product can be employed as a cross-linkable monomer for obtaining radiation-curable coating compositions.
