PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance industrially inexpensively, by cultivating a bacterium belonging to the genus Escherichia to which a vector integrated with DNA carrying genetic information to produce N-acetylneuraminic lyase is transferred.

CONSTITUTION: A bacterium [e.g., Escherichia Coli H3-4 (FERM BP-513), etc.] belonging to the genus Escherichia coli to which a vector integrated with DNA carrying genetic information to produce N-acetylneuraminic lyase is transferred is cultivated in a nutritive medium, to give the aimed substance.
