PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of dye and agricultural chemical, economically, by reacting an aromatic primary amine with an alcohol in the presence of Raney nickel or Raney cobalt catalyst under low hydrogen pressure.
CONSTITUTION: An N-alkyl aromatic secondary amine is prepared by reacting an aromatic primary amine (e.g. aniline) with an alcohol in liquid phase in the presence of Raney nickel or Raney cobalt catalyst under hydrogen pressure of 0.1W3.0kg/cm2. The Raney nicel or Raney cobalt catalyst is preferably those treated with an inorganic acid or an organic acid and adjusted to 4.0W7.5pH. The reaction is carried out at 90W200°C, preferably at 100W180°C. In the reaction under the above hydrogen pressure, the deterioration of the catalyst is extremely small, the catalyst can be used repeatedly for several times with little loss of the catalyst per single pass, and the process is economically advantageous.
