PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance useful as herbicides at a high conversion, by treating a N,N'-disubstituted tetrahydro 4,4'-bipyridyl with a specific alocohol to take out the reaction product, and by reacting the unreacted compound in succession.
CONSTITUTION: An N,N'-disubstituted tetrahydro 4,4'-bipyridyl is treated with a methanol as an oxidizing agent in an organic solvent, e.g. n-pentane or n-hexane, at -10W100°C and 1W50 atm to give N,N'-disubstituted 4,4'-bipyridinium cation redicals, which are taken out of the system with a cation exchange resin, etc., and oxidized with an oxidizing agent to form an N,N'-disubstituted 4,4'-bipyridinium salt. Examples of the usable cation exchange resin include a resin obtained by introducing sulfone groups into a divinylbenzene polymer.
