PURPOSE: To prevent lowering of activity of a recycled and reused catalyst for the preparation of the title compound, which is an intermediate for synthesis of n- octanol, etc., from 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalyst and CO2, by removing high-boiling by-products through extraction with a specific solvent.
CONSTITUTION: 1,3-Butadiene is made to react with water in the presence of CO2 and a catalyst comprising Pd or a Pd compound and a phosphine, a phosphite or an isonitrile, to give octadienol. At least a part of a resulting reaction solution is brought into contact with a 5W16C aliphatic hydrocarbon, to separate high-boiling substances by extraction. Subsequently, a catalyst-containing residual solution of the extraction is recycled to the reaction of 1,3-butadiene and water, and reused. In addition, the octadienol, water, etc, are pref. distilled off from the resulting reaction solution before extraction.
