PURPOSE: To obtain an optionally substd. ethanesulfobetaine compd. useful as a washing and cleaning agent, cosmetics and a surfactant in various industries such as the metalworking, chemical and paper industries by allowing an olefin and an N-contg. heterocyclic compd. to react with sulfur trioxide.
CONSTITUTION: An olefin of formula I (where R1 is a 1-2C alkyl) and a compd. of the formula AH (where A is a 2-20C aliphatic tert. amine or a residue of a hetero ring having 5-6 atoms including at least one N and S and/or O and the residue may be substd. by a 1-4C alkyl, a 2-4C alkenyl, etc.) are allowed to react with sulfur trioxide at 20 to -78°C in a solvent to obtain the objective compd. of formula II (where R2 is H or a 1-20C alkyl). The solvent is a 5-15C alkane or a 1-5C chloroalkane such as dichloroethane and 1,4-dioxane is used as an auxiliary solvent.
