PURPOSE: To prepare acetic acid, acetaldehyde and ethanol from CO and H2, in high selectivity, by using rhodium catalyst in combination with a cocatalyst composed of B-Li component or B-V component.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic acid, acetaldehyde and ethanol are prepared by reacting CO with H2 in the presence of rhodium catalyst at 220W350°C, 20W200atm., and an SV of 1,000W50,000, using B and Li or V as a cocatalyst. The molar ratio of CO:H2 is pref. 3:1W1:3. The catalyst combined with the cocatalyst (i.e. Rh catalyst combined with B and Li or V and supported on a carrier) can be prepared by (1) dissolving Rh, B and Li or V compounds in water or an organic solvent (e.g. n-hexane, alcohol, etc.), (2) adding a porous inorganic carrier material (e.g. silica) to the solution and supporting the solute by immersion process, ion exchange process, etc., and (3) reducing or heat-treating the product.
