PURPOSE: To prepare the titled polymer containing little oligomer by-product, in high effeciency, by polymerizing parahydroxystyrene (PHS) using a specific organic carboxylic acid as polymerization catalyst, and an organic compound having a specific functional group as a molecular weight regulating agent.
CONSTITUTION: Industrially prepared crude PHS is polymerized pref. at 60W200°C for 10minW10hr under stmospheric or positive pressure, in the presence of pref. 0.1W50wt%, based on the PHS, of a polymerization catalyst consisting of an organic carboxylic acid such as formic acid, trichloroacetic acid, maleic acid, citric acid, terephthalic acid, etc., and pref. 10W1,000wt%, based on the PHS, of a molecular weight regulating agent consisting of an organic compound having a functional group, e.g. water, alcohols, phenols, carbonyl group-containing compound such as acetone, etc., if necessary in an inert solvent.
EFFECT: PHS can be exclusively, selectively, and completely polymerized.
USE: Functional polymer material.
