PURPOSE: To obtain new naphthacenequinones used for contrast formation or light absorption for reversible photochromic systems.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I or II [R is 6-14C aryl which may have substituents (alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, phenyl, benzyl, CN, halogen, etc.); and at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is organic thiol, sulfoxyl or sulfonyl, the others being H, F, Cl or Br], e.g. 2,3,8,9-tetraethylthio-6,11-bis(3,5)- dichlorophene-1-oxy)-naphthacene-5,12-dione. A compound of formula I in which at least one of R1-R4 is thiol can be obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with a compound RO-M+C (M is alkali metal) at a high temp. in the presence of a polar, aprotic solvent. A compound of formula I or II are used as photo-initiators of photopolymerization systems, color indicators, color filters, etc.
