PURPOSE: To prepare a polyether at low cost, without removing salts produced as by-products, by reacting a polyfunctional phenol with a polyfunctional halogen compound in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst using water as a reaction solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polyether can be prepared by reacting (A) an alkali metal salt or an alkaline earth metal slat of a polyfunctional phenol dissolved in an aqueous solution of pref. caustic soda or caustic potash, with (B) a polyfunctional halogen compound of formula X-R-Y (X and Y are halogen atom; R is bivalent hydrocarbom or substitued hydrocarbon group), e.g. methylene chloride, in the presence of (C) a phase-transfer catalyst (e.g. a quaternary ammonium slat). The amount of the catalyst is pref. 1W10mol% based on the component (A).
EFFECT: A low-cost, low-boiling solvent (e.g. halogenated hydrocarbon) can be used.
